Maternal Cross-town Traffic

Trying to raise you children is like trying to cross city traffic in a taxi to make an appointment (in this case, their 18th birthday!) in a major urban center.

You get up a head of steam, you move along quickly. This is easy, you think, no problem. Bathing, reading, feeding. No problem. Then there is an accident, something in the road, and you jerk to a halt. They fall. Their feelings get hurt. They are rejected from something (a team, a school, a friend group, a teacher)

You try to re-route. It is stop and go. You're not sure if you have gained or lost ground. Time is ticking. Will you make your destination? Obstacles from every side. This goal seems impossibly distant. Is it even a goal anymore? Teeth. Health. ADD. Friends. Boys. Dances. Homework. Depression. Hormones. Applications. Social Pressures.

What is the goal again? The taxi stops, turns around. The driver consults a map. You think about getting out and walking. Where is the subway? Do I have the address? Can I get a phone signal? Can my partner get there instead. Is it an emergency if I am late?

Trying to raise your children is like trying to cross city traffic in a taxi. Carry a lot of cash. Warn anyone affected you may be late, but you'll get there. Keep breathing. Enjoy the scenery along the way.

DAYS TO 50: 430.
